I just finished the last step in a two-year effort to write a new book on antique quilt tops I finished on my longarm! The photo on my computer screen here is from this book.
Schiffer Publishing sent me the final proofs and I had 24-hours to review our previous work and sign off. Done! ✅️
I can't share too much detail here because books take such a long time and you'll forget before this one is actually available. 😀
Funny thing about book writing is that even though I love holding actual books that are printed on paper, my office is as paperless as possible. I would love to print out PDF proofs and review them in hard copy, but that is so expensive these days! So I have had to force myself to focus on the online review and treat it as diligently as I would paper. Doing so sure makes for a clean desk and less clutter. 🤩

Quiltcon was filled with so many amazing quilts... I took photos of at least 30 quilts that were absolutely stunning... but my heart keeps coming back to this one that I just love.

It is, of course, by the amazing featured artist Hillary Goodwin.

There is something warm, endearing, and also very modern with Hillary's take on this classic pattern. Her color choices are soft, but also distinct - and unexpected.

And the choice to use vintage feed sacks for the school houses is brilliant--- adds yet another dimension to the vibe.

Some might say its risky, or even boring, to redo such a traditional pattern, especially for an event of modern quilts.

But her interpretation allowed me to look beyond the usual schoolhouse pattern and what I see is a heartwarming quilt created with artistic intent. It is simultaneously old and also very fresh.

Hillary's keynote lecture was priceless too! The quilt world is lucky to have people like Hillary.

Writing books is absolutely a labor of love... and over the past decade I have spent countless hours in front of quilts and in front of a computer to bring quilt history to life.

This month I wrapped up the finishing touches on two new books that will be out later this year. I am so excited to be at this stage and to send them off to the professionals for publishing!

I have at least 20 yards of dozens of different African wax fabric... so I thought I would make something really tiny 🤣🤣🤣
The giraffe is 7 inches... the elephant is 4 inches.

I love to make quilts to give away! Here are 2 recent ones... both went to college kids. The left was made in her favorite colors of green and blue and she wanted a modern vibe. On the right Flying Geese in the official college colors make the dorm apartment homey.
🥰 I made at least a half dozen more that I gave away in 2025. Hope to top that in 2026.

I loved every opportunity to talk about quilts and connect with quilt lovers.

On my artistic side, 2025 was a fantastic year. It was also a great year for my other side - my life as a professional researcher/writer/author/lecturer. More on that later.
Here are a few artsy highlights.
1. A solo show at the International Quilt Museum in Lincoln Nebraska!!!! Yes! 10 of my antique quilt tops that I finished on my longarm were exhibited. Completely surreal and so honored. @internationalquiltmuseum
2. I took a 2-day art quilt class with Deborah Boschert in Sisters, Oregon. My first class in many years. It was freeing... Deborah is an inspiring teacher. @deborahboschert
3. One quilt exhibited at Quiltcon Phoenix. So honored to have a quilt accepted into this prestigious show! #quiltcon2025
4. One of my art quilts is in the permanent collection of the International Quilt Museum and it was chosen for the exhibition "Aftershocks: the long shadow of 2020." I was able to see it twice ... hanging alongside so many interesting works of art.
5. In August, I began work on a huge cityscape of New York City. It is still a work in progress, but I am truly enjoying the making --- and that's really what it's all about! 😃
If you have read all the way to here, thanks for sticking with this and for sharing the love of quilting! These lists are wonderful documentation for me to remember and reflect.... and close one chapter and prepare for a new one ❤️
