I just dug this quilt out of the closet and hung i

I just dug this quilt out of the closet and hung it in my studio. I made this in March of 2021... and it is one of my favorite quilts. The design is inspired by a 1940s embroidered artwork from Uruguay that is part of the Museum of Fine Arts Houston collection.
Today, I made a label for this quilt that includes a photo of the original artwork 😊
The design is pieced and appliqué.
Love these bold colors.

Registration is now open for a new 8-part summer lecture series hosted by the James Renwick Alliance for Craft, the member organization of the Smithsonian's Renwick Gallery.
This live, online lecture series is open to everyone. Register at @jracraft website.
My lecture series will cover "Two Centuries of Quilts: From Necessity to Fine Art."
Lectures begin May 28.
This is a great series for anyone interested in the history of American quilts.

I'm so excited to finally announce this! I have been invited by the James Renwick Alliance for Craft - the member organization of the Smithsonian's Renwick Gallery - to present a new, 8-part summer lecture series. Starting May 28, I will present "Two Centuries of Quilts: From Necessity to Fine Art."
This series will cover a lot of ground... from mid-1800s, to the quilting revivals of the 1930s and 1970s, to the birth of art quilting... and so much more.
Courses will be live every Tuesday evening and taught entirely online. Go to JR Craft
.org to learn more and register. Open to anyone. Enrollment is capped at 40 to allow for interactivity. 👍

Sunrise in my studio. On the longarm today is a really fun vintage feed sack top. I am quilting the heck out this one with lots of thread changes.
Don't know the date or the story of this quilt... my guess would be 1940s or 50s maybe. But I love this turquoise ish color in the negative spaces.

These two quilts were made in China in 1992. They are reproductions of historic American quilts from the collection of the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. The Smithsonian's decision to mass produce these American treasures in China set off a huge controversy in the quilt world. You can read the whole story in Quiltfolk Journal... an online site open to everyone.
These quilts are part of my collection, and I like that they are a curious part of quilt history.

I took this photo in China in 1987! It's hard to believe, but at that time, there weren't very many things in our daily lives that were made in China. So a couple years after I took this photo, when the Smithsonian National Museum of American History decided to mass produce 4 Amercian quilts from its collection in China, they faced a swift backlash from American quilters. Everything from picket lines to fax attacks.
One of the 4 quilts was the Bible quilt made by Harriet Powers, which was especially appalling to the quilters. Read more about this little known episode in quilt history in my article in the Quiltfolk Journal. @quiltfolk
The Journal is a beautiful online extension of the magazine and is available for free to everyone.
That 1987 trip was my first trip to China, and it was so memorable. The country was still years away from its transformation. We went back again in the early 2000s, and it was a completely different place.

This is the first antique quilt I bought. I purchased it back in 2008 from a dealer in Brenham, Texas. I still remember that day. My husband and I sifted through huge stacks in a very hot storage room. When I found this one, she would only take cash or check. My husband kindly drove back to Brenham (about 1 hour +) the next week to pay her and pick up my quilt. I didn't carry a checkbook back then, and certainly don't now.
I didn't know at the time that I would keep collecting... but I love the hunt! And these days, I am only collecting old tops and finishing them on my longarm machine. 15 done and many more in the queue.
This quilt is c. 1900, possibly made in Texas.
The hand stitching is gorgeous... which is what attracted me to this one.

While the camera angle of this selfie is not the most flattering 🤣 we had to get "Bob" in the frame 🥰
If you're not familiar with "Bob" he was the People's Choice winner at the 2020 Quiltcon... and it was delightful to see him again in person.

Last night, I presented a lecture and trunk show at the Tall Pines Quilt Guild in Huntsville, Texas. It's always great to take my antique quilts out for show and tell! I have a whole series of 15 quilt tops (so far) that I've finished on my longarm. Thanks Tall Pines for the invitation to speak... my 3rd time!!!

This quilt was juried into the 2021 International Quilt Festival in Houston and the 2022 Quiltcon in Phoenix.

This is "Manhattan." 80 x 80 inches. 5th in a series exploring this style. Improv pieced in a Courthouse Steps pattern.
There are 3,383 patches in here! Yes, I counted. Mostly black and midnight blue. I used a ton of cotton thread to piece it, and it is free motion quilted in silk thread. The word Manhattan is stitched 142 times 😀
I began this quilt back in December. Finished in February. Been too busy to photograph it. Also, black is very hard to photograph properly. Not sure these photos do it justice, but in any case I love how this turned out. Might be my favorite in the series.
Others in this series are blue, gold, red, and taupe. I will post them to show the whole series.

Today, I wrapped up 4 lectures in the past 7 days! Woohoo! Always love sharing quilt history and talking with quilters.
Thank you to the Golden Triangle Quilt Guild @goldentrianglequiltguild for the invite to be in person today. The drive is only about 90 minutes from Houston, but it was stormy all day!
Today's lecture was "The Calling of Quilt Collectors" and I brought a small trunk show of 6 antique quilt tops that I've finished on my longarm! So fun to bring these out and show them.

Japan last week... Texas Hill Country today. Beautiful sunrise after a day of thunderstorms. I'm presenting a lecture to the Hill Country Quilt Guild later this morning. Always a pleasure to be invited back here. This will be my 3rd time to present to this dynamic group of quilters!
Today's topic: Sewing and Survival: Native American Quilts from 1880 - 2022.
And later this week, I'll leave West Texas to head to East Texas for a lecture on America's most famous quilt collectors at the Golden Triangle Quilt Guild.

"Sewing and Survival: Native American Quilts from 1880 -2022." This is a deep dive into the origins of quilting in Indigenous communities, as well as what's happening today.
