Quiltcon 2025! Arrived in Phoenix yesterday and made a quick tour of the exhibition. My quilt "Manhattan" is on view!
Honored to have a piece of art hanging in this incredible collection of modern quilts.

Hello Quiltcon 2025! Can't wait to fly to Phoenix.

I'm a writer. A reader. A researcher. And a quilter.

I have a quilt in this year's show. It is titled Manhattan. It's huge and mostly black and midnight blue 🖤

I'm giving a Quiltcon lecture Sunday afternoon on the history of red dye from Mexico. If you're not coming to Phoenix, the MQG has a streaming option for lectures after the event. This is a great way to make content available to everyone!

This will be my 8th consecutive year to lecture at Quiltcon!

In May, I have a new book coming out on Japanese quilts! This is my 3rd book on Japan. I have co-authored it with Naomi Ichikawa @qd_quiltdiary

Houston's epic snow storm blew in and out in a day. Here's one more quilt I took out for a snow break. "Mrs. Rose's X" based on an antique pattern. 90 x 90 inches. Made in 2020.

Y'all, it's SNOWING!!! A LOT!
Houston is having a real snow day. About 3 inches in my area so far, and still snowing pretty steady right now. The city is shut down. Both airports are closed. Might seem funny to folks in the north, but 'round here there's not a snow plow for 200 miles. 😅
As we watched all the weather warnings, my first thought was, which quilt would look best in the snow? 🤣🥰🥶
This one is pretty awesome. Another pandemic quilt. Made with vintage Japanese Yukata on the borders. Mix of indigo, Yukata, and African fabrics in the improv blocks.
70 x 70 inches. Made November 2020.

For the past three Decembers, I've turned my studi

For the past three Decembers, I've turned my studio over to my SIL for two weeks while my daughter and SIL are here for Christmas. They live in Manhattan... and when they make the trek to Houston, Ronald (the SIL) comes completely prepared to immediately begin working on his art quilts.
The ideas are in his head... and he works long hours while all the treasures of my studio are available to him.
This past Christmas... he finished 4 mini quilts (which he started at his home). And on top of that, he started and finished this monster size quilt. 120 x 130 inches!!! It took every inch of my longarm frame. The top is all improvisation pieced. He did all the free motion quilting too. No computers.
When he went to photograph it in Manhattan, it took a village to hold up this giant quilt.
Check out the second image taken on the living room floor (after we moved furniture out of the way) 🤣
I love to watch his approach to making art quilts. A fresh perspective. Not to mention the awesome-ness of bringing young people into quiltmaking! 🥰

Presented a lecture tonight to the West Houston Quilters Guild!
It has been a busy start to the New Year.
This is my 3rd time to visit this dynamic guild over the past 9 years. They are currently meeting in a Christian church in far West Houston. The rush hour commute out there makes me thankful I now work from home.
Tonight's topic was Sewing & Survival: Native American Quilts from 1880 to 2022.

I've been redecorating our living room, and I decided it was time to finally frame this quilt that I love so much. 🥰
I purchased a floating frame in the exact custom size and placed the quilt in it.
Looks less DIY, and more like art.
We had to put the frame together... but it was so easy. And I found a site that was affordable and they did a great job!

I made this quilt in 2021. I took it outside for a photo, then I stuck it in the closet and completely forgot about it. I think I put it out of my mind for 2 reasons. One, it was a pandemic quilt, and I made it to keep busy, then moved on. And two, I think at the time I was fixated on the imperfections.
I know this is something that happens to all of us! It is so unfortunate that we play this mental game where the things we make are not good enough.
Now that I have rediscovered it... I absolutely love it! In fact, I am so glad I made it, and I love the quilting and its originalality. I do not see the flaws 😃
I have had a rotating set of quilts hung above our bed, and none of them seemed perfect. This one might be it. I woke up this morning and smiled at it.

I have given myself the gift of time this month an

I have given myself the gift of time this month and I did not work! It's been great to recharge and think of all I've accomplished and also get psyched up about next year!
Here's just a short list of some of the professional things I am most proud of from 2024! ✨️
1. I went to Japan in March, and I just finished a new book with my co-author Naomi Ichikawa @qd_quiltdiary
2. 35 lectures!!! Yep!!!
3. I hosted 2 Textile Talks with incredible women --- Susan Hudson and Elaine Yau. @elaineyyyau
4. I traveled on 2 Quiltfolk trips... Tulsa and New Mexico! Love these trips. I also wrote more than a dozen feauture articles this year. @quiltfolk
5. I stayed connected to so many longtime quilt friends... including my dear friend David Owen Hastings who hosted me in his home. @davidowenhastings
6. I made some new quilty friends --- including the fabulous Cecilia Koppmann @ceciliakoppmann
7. I had my first solo exhibition of quilts at the International Quilt Festival.

There is so much more. I am grateful for this quilt life! 🥰

Quiltcon is now one of the most competitive quilt competitions in the world! 2,269 entries and only 460 chosen. I have been rejected countless times, so today's news is especially thrilling.

Antique Schoolhouse quilt top finished by me with free motion, hand-guided drawings.
I had so much fun drawing these child-like pictures in thread. I only used red thread, and no patterns or stencils... I just used my longarm like a pencil. I love the way it turned out ❤️
Also, to make this evem more fun to do, I did not start and stop the machine... I just began on one side and kept going for each section of the borders!
I don't know why the maker turned half the houses in one direction and the other half the opposite. But I flipped the quilt on the frame and drew the opposite drawings oriented to match the houses.
The date of the quilt top is unknown. The Schoolhouses are very faded, and I think the fading gives the quilt a lovely, modern patina. The grey-brown blocks were originally blue. The other colors are gold, red, brown, and green.
Used thick cotton thread - 40 wt Aurifil @aurifilthread
I think the red thread drawings are reminiscent of old red work embroidery.
Purchased in November from Xenia Cord, an antique dealer at International Quilt Festival.

An old family quilt with a story. This quilt with

An old family quilt with a story. This quilt with its adapted, grown-up Sunbonnet Sue blocks was made by my great aunt in the 1930s. 40 years later, in the 1970s, my aunt found it in the trunk of a car, where the maker's son had wrapped it around an old motor... as if the motor was more precious than the handmade quilt!
My aunt snatched the quilt away and repaired the worn parts with a layer of tulle.
This quilt is an incredible rescue story.
But it has survived, and now it's part of my collection.
